Recovery Meditation #22

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be enslaved by anything. 1 Corinthians 6:12 ESV

Addicts have surrendered their lives to alcohol or drugs. They have become slaves to drugs and/or alcohol. Paul tells us that as Christians, all things are lawful; but, the wise Christian will reject those things which may enslave them. Alcohol is lawful, wine is part of the Eucharist, but for an alcoholic it is not good. The alcoholic should stick to grape juice. Most addicts will tell you that they wish they had never started using drugs. If they could do it over again, they would reject the drugs and not be enslaved by anything. Entering addiction treatment is the first step to achieving freedom from slavery to drugs or alcohol. In recovery addicts break the bonds of addiction and regain control of their lives. So often I hear an addict tell me that they want to “get their life back”. That is what recovery is all about. In a very real sense it is like being reborn.

Pray: Dear Lord, help me get my life back. Help me be free from this slavery. Help me be born again. Make me a new creation in Christ. Amen.
