I just read a newspaper article about the increasing number of people who declare themselves atheist or agnostic. Sadly, it seems a number of these people think that the answer to life’s questions lies in science. Obviously, they do not have a reason to believe. It is interesting to me how these people somehow turn from the God of Abraham to the God of Science. You see, I am a scientist, I have three graduate degrees in the sciences and I don’t have enough faith to be an atheist.
Reason to Believe (RTB) is an organization composed of scientists (Astronomers, Physicists, Chemists, Biologists, Mathematicians, etc) who all believe in the validity of science and the Lordship of Jesus Christ. I wonder if any of the Science worshipers have taken time to read their work? I have not read it all by any means and I do not have any formal relationship with RTB other than attending some of their chapter meetings; but, I think that they are certainly very accredited scientists and they have no qualms about declaring their faith. So, how is it that they dive deep into science and come up still believing in God? I think it is because they dive deep and come to understand how improbable life on earth is and how miraculous it is that the universe is structured to allow for life to exist. It is because they understand and they reason that they believe in God.
If you are an atheist, I encourage you to read about the fine tuning of fundamental constants, like the mass of the proton and the charge of the electron and how one billionth of a change in these (really a much, much smaller change than that) would prevent conditions for the existence for life from occuring in the universe. One author concluded that it is more likely that a tornado would blow through a junk yard and leave behind a fully functional 747 airplane than that the fundamental constants of physics would be so fine tuned as to allow for the conditions to support life to occur in the universe. So, if you are an atheist, I have to admire your level of faith for it requires much more faith to believe that the universe came to be as it is by random chance than it does to believe that it was created.
For those of you who believe, pray for your brothers and sisters who do not believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Without Jesus people can be happy but they cannot know the joy and the peace that passes understanding that faith in Him provides and in the end their fate will not be a happy one. We cannot not badger, logic or force someone to believe in Jesus, all we can do is point them towards Jesus and let the Holy Spirit work. Jesus saves all who ask but they have to ask. Remember, He let the “rich young man” (Mark 10: 17-22) walk away; while His is a free gift, He will not force it on anyone.
