The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18 ESV
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3 ESV
Most people have heard about “bottoming out”. That is when an alcoholic or addict’s life is at its lowest point. They can sink no lower. Sometimes the addict has to reach this point before they decide to get help. At this point the addict is “broken hearted” and “crushed in spirit”. The good news is that God heals the broken hearted. He does not despise the person who comes to him with a “broken spirit” and a “contrite heart”. Indeed, this is the very sacrifice that God wants.
If you have tried to stop using drugs or alcohol on your own, you may have suffered failures and feel hopeless. You may feel that God cannot love you because you are such a wretched person. Do not forget, God created you and he loves you. He will not abandon you. You may feel that you are far from God but you are not: At this very moment He is near.
Pray: God, lift me from this pit, accept my sacrifice of a contrite heart and mend my broken spirit. Help me rebuild my life and give me the courage and strength to do your will and not mine. Amen.
