Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 ESV
The addict has the burden of their own recovery and the added burden of knowing that their children are at increased risk of developing addiction. The addict must first see to their own recovery but then they must also do what they can to see that their children do not follow in their footsteps. Now that you have accepted responsibility for your own recovery, the next step is accepting the responsibility for bringing your children up in a drug free house and for teaching them the dangers of drug experimentation.
It also is your responsibility to be the spiritual leader in your home. Attending church and Bible study is essential to spiritual growth. How can you expect your children to do this if you do not? A spiritual foundation is no guarantee against developing addiction; but, sometimes drug experimentation is done by youth seeking to fill a God shaped hole in their heart. Filling that hole with the Holy Spirit may help keep them from resorting to drugs. Have you accepted your responsibilities as a parent recovering from addiction? Are you showing your children that knowing God’s word is important to you and to them?
Pray: Holy Spirit empower me to be a Godly parent. Heal my children of any hurts that I may have inflicted through my addiction and keep them away from drugs. Help me become the spiritual leader of my family and help me lead my children to Christ. Amen.
