“You shall not bow down to [idols] or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.” —- Exodus 20:5
“The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” —- Exodus 34:6-7
Addiction is thought to be about 50% genetic. The other 50% is related to lifestyle and environmental factors. The children of addicts are clearly at increased risk of developing alcohol or drug addiction. It is not uncommon to find that multiple members of a family are afflicted by the disease of addiction. It seems that when one worships the idol of alcohol or drugs that the trait is often passed down to succeeding generations. Yet, there is hope for those who struggle with addiction and there is hope for their children.
You cannot do anything about your genes; but, you can choose to break away from a family that has fallen into idol worship. You can choose adoption into the family of God and claim your inheritance as a son or daughter of the most high King, you can establish yourself as a brother or sister of Jesus Christ.
It is Jesus Christ who will rescue you from this world of sin and death; if, you choose to reject the idols of drugs and alcohol and accept the cup of redemption and the bread of life offered by Jesus. Most addicts can be re-established in their lives, restored and strengthened by the grace of God through His healing expressed through medications, therapy and spiritual growth. They can lead their families from the darkness of addiction into the light of sobriety found in Jesus Christ.
Pray: Jesus come into my life, place the Holy Spirit in my heart and rescue me from my addictions, help me to guard my children from becoming addicts. Help me teach them your ways. Help me teach them not to worship the idols of drugs and alcohol. Amen.
