My First Meditation on Addiction

So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!   — Romans 7:21-25 —

Addiction is a horrible disease. It destroys lives and families. It is all too often fatal. Those afflicted with addiction often feel helpless and hopeless in the face of this overwhelming illness. They often feel as if there is a war going on inside of themselves. They know that they are a good person, they want to do good but there is a force within, the addict, the sin within, that leads them to do evil. This force holds them prisoner. It is killing them. The addict cries out: What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?

Who will rescue you from your  addiction?

Pray: Lord Jesus, I am wretched, afflicted by addictions that only you, the ultimate physician, can cure. Guide my counselor, sponsor and physician, that they will be able to help me. Fill me with the Holy Spirit and release me from my slavery to substances and free me for your service. Help me submit to your will. Amen.
